Season 3, Episode 13 · November 24, 2015 · pie shop
dual-business episode, aired with Da Lobsta (episode title: "Da Lobsta / Betty's Pie Whole")
What happened after
Pie shop with current menu listings across multiple platforms (2025-2026); sister bakery Elizabethan Desserts (same founder) was sold in Sept 2021 per an April 2024 founder social post, but Betty's Pie Whole itself is not stated as sold.
What happened on the show
Betty's Pie Whole was the second business in the show's only two business episode, and the one Marcus actually wanted to back. Betty had overextended herself by opening two stores, and the second, a dessert shop called Elizabethan Desserts, was a completely different concept from her pie business. Marcus offered $75,000 for a 25 percent stake. He pinpointed the kitchen as the bottleneck and invested in new equipment to raise output, since the shop kept running out of pies before the day was half over. He pushed Betty on two habits, her refusal to write down her recipes, which jammed up the whole process, and her stubborn insistence on making her own ice cream. Most importantly, he convinced her to close Elizabethan Desserts and refocus on the pies. When he returned, the kitchen was humming, Betty had documented her recipes, and she had outsourced the ice cream, exactly the discipline the business had lacked.
After the cameras left
The pie shop is still open. Betty's Pie Whole, on Quail Gardens Drive in Encinitas, shows a current menu across multiple platforms with listings dated into 2025 and 2026. There is one loose thread from the episode's advice. The sister bakery Elizabethan Desserts, which Marcus urged her to close, was later reported sold in September 2021, per a 2024 social post from the founder, but Betty's Pie Whole itself is not described as sold. The core business Marcus focused her on remains active. Medium confidence open as of 2026.
