What happened on the show
West End Coffee was run by Rebecca and John, a divorced couple still bound together by the business, which roasted and sold coffee wholesale but had very limited capacity. Marcus offered $200,000 for a controlling 51 percent. They agreed at first, but he quickly saw that the divorce had frozen the company. Rebecca feared John would fire her, while John, who had sunk his retirement fund into the business only for Rebecca to control it, felt like a hostage, and their constant bickering had collapsed communication across the whole operation. Marcus tried to mediate, persuading Rebecca to give up control of John's fund, and set the pair up to meet a local restaurant about a wholesale partnership. When he returned a week later, the deal they had reached had stalled and the two had slid back into their old arguments. Unable to work with a couple who could not work with each other, Marcus left without closing.
