What happened on the show
Sarra Costello blamed a rivalry between her two flair bartenders for the tension, bad reviews and broken bottles at her Carlsbad gastropub. Charles Stiles sent mystery diners Chelsea and Amanda in as a waitress and a customer. As aired, both bartenders are being played: a waitress has been stealing their tips, posting fake negative reviews under an alias, wasting alcohol and smashing empty bottles to set them against each other in hopes both get fired. The confrontation has Sarra firing her after she argues her case to Stiles, and the two bartenders reconcile once the scheme is revealed. Given the scripting claims that later dogged Mystery Diners, this manufactured-rivalry sting is best framed as broadcast rather than as documented event.
After the cameras left
The Compass has since closed, in the ordinary way and by the owner's own hand. The gastropub at 300 Carlsbad Village Drive announced its closure in late 2024 and shut for good that December after thirteen years, confirmed by the business itself, per our 2026 check. Thirteen years is a full run for a gastropub, and its ending, a decade past the episode, was ordinary lifecycle rather than any consequence of a sting. A neighborhood room reached its end on its owners' terms.
