promotion-sabotage sting

What happened after

Mexican restaurant at 2706 5th Ave (Bankers Hill); permanently closed after approximately 15 years in business.

Closure date on record: 2025-10

What happened on the show

Isabel Cruz and Todd Camburn were split over which waiter to promote for a new San Francisco location, and complaints about botched orders muddied the choice at their San Diego restaurant. Charles Stiles sent mystery diners Chelsea, Seth and Shane in as a waitress and customers. As aired, both candidates are largely solid; the real trouble is a waitress trading on the owners' indecision, stalking one of the men out of lingering feelings, then deleting his orders in retaliation and causing the very complaints against him. The confrontation has the owners firing her and warning him off mixing romance with work. Because Mystery Diners was later accused of scripting its confrontations, this promotion sting is best read as broadcast rather than as verified.

After the cameras left

Barrio Star has since closed, on a long and honorable clock. The Bankers Hill Mexican restaurant at 2706 5th Avenue, opened by chef Isabel Cruz in 2010, closed permanently after roughly fifteen years, per local coverage in our 2026 pass. Fifteen years is a full life for a restaurant, and its ending was ordinary lifecycle rather than any fallout from a hidden-camera night a decade earlier. A well-established room reached its natural end, which is how most of these stories actually close.
