What happened on the show

Jamie and Francine Alba brought Charles Stiles a set of financial discrepancies at their Sherman Oaks Italian kitchen, with a bookkeeper as the obvious suspect. Stiles sent mystery diners Loree and Mark in as a waitress and a busboy. As aired, the bookkeeper is careless, late and napping on the job but actually honest, flagging a cash shortfall herself. The real scheme belongs to manager Mike, filmed drawing a paycheck for a fictitious employee named Hector Rodriguez, pocketing a check from a window-cleaning firm he had fired without authority, and making the bussers do the windows instead. The confrontation has the owners firing Mike, who insists he knows his worth and can work anywhere. Because Mystery Diners was later accused of scripting these reveals, this cooking-the-books sting is best framed as broadcast rather than as verified.
