What happened on the show
Esdras Ochoa and Javi Fregoso were hearing that off-menu food was coming out of their Los Angeles taco stand, and they suspected a cook who had gone rogue once before. Charles Stiles sent mystery diners Brenda and Grant in as a cashier and a customer. As aired, the cook is only feeding staff without permission; the real operator is a cashier, running a cash-only sideline with her grandmother, selling off-menu plates built on the restaurant's own tortillas, which the owners import from Mexicali. The confrontation has the owners firing her as she vows she and her grandmother will do better with a food truck of their own. Given the scripting claims that later dogged Mystery Diners, this tortilla-theft sting is best framed as broadcast rather than as documented event.
After the cameras left
Mexicali Taco and Co. is still open and thriving on its own merits. The taco stand at 702 North Figueroa Street carries reviews dated well into 2026 in our pass, a clear sign of a going concern. A separate older Mexicali location elsewhere in the city has closed, but the Figueroa Street operation that matches this entity keeps serving. No rescue was involved; a popular taco spot simply kept doing what earned it a following in the first place.
