Southern Culture

Atlanta, Georgia

OPEN

Yes. This one is still open.

This entry is a packaged breakfast-mix brand, not a sit-down restaurant.

What happened after

Southern Culture Artisan Foods pivoted from restaurant/cafe concept into a packaged pancake and waffle mix brand, sold online and through major retailers; founder Erika Barrett also separately opened SOCU Southern Kitchen and Oyster Bar restaurants in Mobile and Birmingham, Alabama.

What happened on the show

Southern Culture was a packaged Southern food business whose owner, in the episode's words, had bitten off more than she could chew. Enormous debts had choked the company's cash flow, pushing both the business and the owner's family to the brink, and the core lesson Marcus set out to teach was that she could not do everything herself. It was a recurring Profit theme, a founder whose refusal or inability to delegate had become the very thing threatening to sink a promising brand. The path forward ran through the debt, the cash flow, and above all the owner's willingness to build a team and let go, the operational maturity a scaling food company demands. The product had an audience, but the way the business was being run, and carried, by one overextended person, was simply not sustainable.

After the cameras left

Southern Culture is still going, in an evolved form. The company moved away from a restaurant and cafe concept to become a packaged pancake and waffle mix label, selling online and through large retailers, while its founder, Erika Barrett, separately opened Southern kitchen and oyster bar restaurants in Alabama. Products are currently listed through large retail and grocery delivery channels. Because some of that confirmation came via search snippets rather than direct pages, we hold it at medium confidence, but the brand is clearly active and has diversified. Open as of 2026.
