Mr. Green Tea was the rare business on the show that was not actually failing. Launched as a rival to a premium ice cream label, the New Jersey company sold green tea, ginger, and red bean ice cream into restaurants, and its problem was stagnation rather than collapse. Production was capped because they leaned on a co packer instead of making their own ice cream, and owner Rich played every decision conservatively while his son Michael pushed to grow. Michael wanted a bigger facility and pegged the cost of getting one running at around $600,000, and Marcus matched that number, offering $600,000 for a 35 percent stake. They bought the new property and began developing gelato and mochi lines. The generational tension nearly stalled it. Rich found the pace dizzying and struggled to commit, while Michael made careless moves, buying a promotional car without approval and badly underestimating the build out cost. Marcus stuck with the investment anyway. A month on, the warehouse was cleared and the projections pointed to solid growth ahead.
After the cameras left
Mr. Green Tea is still churning. The manufacturer traces its ice cream back to 1968 and continues to operate from East Front Street in Keyport, New Jersey, with a current Chamber of Commerce listing carrying 56 reviews. This one was a growth story rather than a rescue from the brink, and the growth appears to have held. The company is active and easy to find, its founding heritage intact.
