What happened on the show
Alex Polizzi turned to the Rutland Arms in Bakewell, on the edge of the Peak District, during series 6. The hotel enjoyed high summer occupancy, but poor organisation, bad reviews and a winter drought of visitors had driven David, its 68-year-old owner, to the edge of financial ruin. This was a seasonality problem compounded by operational sloppiness: a coaching inn with a strong location that made hay in summer and then bled through the quiet months. Polizzi's task was to tighten the running of the place and give it a reason to draw trade year-round, so that the good months were not simply spent covering the bad ones and an elderly owner could climb out of danger. Owner David's summer-heavy, winter-starved trade aired in August 2010 before the property found stability inside a professional hotel group.

The Rutland Arms came through and now sits within a strong group. The thirty-two room historic coaching inn beside the River Wye in Bakewell is part of the Coaching Inn Group's Premium Collection, the same group that runs several other survivors in this directory. Its own site is live as of 2026. Absorption into a professional group gave the property the year-round marketing muscle and operational backing a single elderly owner could not provide, turning a seasonally precarious inn into a stable branded hotel.
