The Artist Residence in Brighton was one of Alex Polizzi's more distinctive series 6 cases, a nine-bedroom bed and breakfast run by Justin, a 21-year-old student, its rooms decorated and its shifts covered by emerging artists. The concept was a cross between an art gallery and a hotel, and at the time it was failing on both counts. A bold idea in the hands of a very young owner is exactly the sort of thing that needs professional shaping, and Polizzi's job was to keep the creative spark that made the place interesting while imposing the operational rigour a real hotel requires. The raw material was promising; the execution was where it fell down. The gallery-hotel concept aired in July 2010, and the show returned in 2013 to track a young owner's venture that would grow into a national brand.
After the cameras left
The Artist Residence did not just survive, it grew into a brand. The Brighton property now operates as a twenty-seven room boutique bohemian hotel with a restaurant, part of a well-established multi-property group, holding a strong 4.5 out of five across around 1,700 TripAdvisor reviews. The show returned for a revisit in 2013, confirming the upward trajectory. The young owner's gallery-hotel gamble, which Polizzi found floundering, became one of the most emphatic success stories in the show's history, scaling far beyond the single struggling B&B she first inspected.
