What happened on the show
Alex Polizzi visited 63-year-old David Maloney in the Lake District during series 7 to tackle his dated bed and breakfast. Brendan Chase had eleven bedrooms, a strict set of house rules and had largely bypassed the internet age, a combination that made it unpopular with a good share of guests. Maloney was well respected, but his defences were up, and Polizzi's challenge was to break through them to improve his profitability. The case was a study in a proprietor whose rigidity, from the rules to the refusal to modernise, was quietly costing him custom.
