What happened on the show
Degel's Staten Island stakeout of the Oakwood Diner leaned into a pointed idea, that here the customer was too often being treated as if the customer were wrong. The hidden cameras captured the floor in its natural state, and as broadcast the footage gave Degel a documented picture of how staff handled the people paying the bills. His confrontation used that evidence to press on service attitude, one of the recurring failings the stakeout format is built to expose. Degel's fixes centered on resetting how the room treated its guests and tightening the systems behind the counter. The episode fit the show's throughline neatly, using surveillance to reveal the difference between an owner's assumption that the diner ran fine and the reality the cameras recorded when nobody behind the counter knew they were being watched.
After the cameras left
The Oakwood Diner survives, now under an evolved name. The same address on Amboy Road operates as Mike's Jr's Oakwood Diner, with an official site showing active online ordering, a current menu, and the same phone number carried in show era listings. The name has picked up a Mike's Jr's prefix, so we hold the identity continuity at moderate confidence, but the diner itself is clearly open and serving.
