What happened on the show

Bleeding roughly twenty thousand dollars a month and buried in about two million dollars of debt, Hoffman's in Santa Cruz was a family in crisis when Robert Irvine walked in. The relatives argued constantly and the relationships were suffering under the financial weight. Irvine's diagnosis was an identity problem: the place could not decide whether it was a restaurant or a bakery, and he told them to be strong at both or focus on one. Acting on that, the pastry cases that had displayed Ed's cakes were replaced with a wine bar, and the design and build team gave the restaurant a makeover on the show's standing two-day, roughly ten-thousand-dollar footing. Forcing a muddled concept to choose an identity was the core of the visit, and the wine-bar pivot was Irvine's bet on what the room should become.
