What happened on the show

Michael Madlock kept hearing about beers he had never brewed being poured at his Newport Beach brewpub, even as his own beer sales fell, and he suspected his brewmaster of a side operation. Charles Stiles sent mystery diners Amber and Grant in as a customer and a barback. As aired, the brewmaster is clean; the culprit is a bartender named Mike, home-brewing his own flavored beers, which prove terrible, and pushing them on Madlock's customers, refusing cards for them because they were off the books. A waiter is caught helping. The confrontation has Madlock firing Mike, who fumes that his boss passed up a marketing opportunity. Because Mystery Diners was later accused of scripting its confrontations, this off-menu-beer sting is best framed as broadcast rather than as documented event.
