Closure date on record: 2009-12

What happened on the show

Ramsay's feelings on the food at La Riviera were split. Head chef Loic Lefebvre was technically gifted, but his cooking was over-complicated, expensive to produce, and too rarefied for Inverness, or arguably for anywhere. Ramsay's fix was as much cultural as culinary: he took Loic and his team to an Inverness Caledonian Thistle match and had them wear kilts for the reopening, then helped build a menu that stayed refined while turning cost-effective and welcoming to locals. On the revisit, at a restaurant owned by millionaire Barry Larsen, Loic had held to the new menu and the room had been redesigned, both of which pleased Ramsay. A closing caption noted something the audience had not yet learned during filming: shortly before the episode aired, the restaurant had been renamed Abstract. It was the sort of change that hinted the loftier ambition Ramsay had tried to temper was already creeping back.

After the cameras left

Under its new name, Abstract, the restaurant climbed high enough to earn a Michelin Guide Rising Star, then ended without ceremony. It closed abruptly at the close of trading on Hogmanay 2009, leaving no notice for the customers who turned up afterward. We hold this at high confidence: a reputable Scottish paper reported the closing, and the exact timing came through a direct quote from that piece. For all the reinvention Ramsay set in motion in Inverness, the finish was sudden, a locked door on New Year rather than a slow fade.
