Karan Townsend ran Town's Inn in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia more like a second-hand store than a hotel, hoarding personal belongings across a two-building complex: the Heritage House held guest rooms and a full restaurant, while the Mountain Home held a hostel, more rooms, and a cafe. Ramsay called some of what he found the worst practices he had ever seen: food pulled straight from the freezer, grimy amenities, and an owner who refused to see any of it. He shut down dinner service after learning the kitchen was plating store-bought rotisserie chicken, boiling premade burgers, and cooking with old, processed ingredients kept in moldy freezers outside. A bathroom failed a bacteria test. From there the tone shifted to repair: Ramsay had a heart-to-heart with Karan and her son Jason, then green-lit renovations that replaced her cramped living quarters with a proper store room, refreshed the upstairs rooms, upgraded the kitchen, and installed a sleek new dining room. He also gifted Karan a two-month stay in a rented house and a spa makeover.
After the cameras left
Karan took the changes to heart. She embraced the new menu, rooms, and kitchen, and after her two-month stay in the house Ramsay rented, she moved back into a second-floor room at the inn. The attached restaurant closed in 2017, but the lodging side kept going and business grew after the visit. As of our latest verification pass the pre-Civil War stone inn is still operating under the same name in Harpers Ferry, with a strong body of reviews, a recent one logged in 2026, and a solid local ranking. The official site returned an access error on our direct check, so the current review record stands as the primary evidence, but the picture is of an inn that survived its own reputation.
