Retired professional pitcher Dan Serafini had traded the mound for a bar top and struggled with the leap to leadership. At The Bullpen Bar in Sparks, Nevada, Serafini let his staff drink themselves useless and give away his profits, running the room like a permanent clubhouse rather than a business. Taffer's rescue centered on turning a ballplayer accustomed to being one of the guys into an actual boss, someone who could hold a payroll and a crowd accountable.
