What happened on the show

A pair of brothers who owned a legendary Chicago pub were tearing it apart from the inside, each convinced the other was mismanaging the place. Taffer's job at The Abbey Pub, a live-music room at 3420 West Grace Street, had less to do with drink specs than with getting two feuding owners onto the same page long enough to save what their family had built. The venue carried real history and a real following for its shows, which made the friction all the more expensive, every argument bleeding into how the room was run. Taffer worked as much referee as rescuer, forcing the brothers to agree on a single plan and a single chain of command before the crowd walked for good. He kept the Abbey name and its music-hall identity intact through the reveal, treating the pub's legacy as an asset worth preserving once the people running it stopped undermining each other, and staking the rescue on family peace rather than a rebrand.

After the cameras left

The Abbey's history did not protect it. A 2015 fire dealt the venue a blow it never fully recovered from, and although it briefly reopened in 2019 as Chicago Abbey, that revival also failed. Yelp carries a closed tag updated as recently as July 2026, a TripAdvisor review is headlined around a northwest-side institution shutting its doors, and Block Club Chicago covered the failed 2019 reopening. The room that hosted decades of Chicago shows is gone.
