What happened on the show
An Asian-fusion restaurant that had been a genuine success was brought low by Hurricane Maria. At Shibo in San Juan, Puerto Rico, siblings Johnathan and Gabriella Cruz were in over their heads on storm damage, and Taffer arrived to help them bring back one of the lights of Puerto Rico's dining scene. Opened in 2016, Shibo had thrived before the hurricane, so the rescue was about restoration after disaster rather than fixing a failing concept. Taffer worked to repair the damage and steady the siblings' operation, giving a beloved fusion spot a path back from the storm, betting that helping the pair recover could return a valued San Juan restaurant to the community that had loved it before Maria. A restaurant that had been one of the brightest spots in San Juan's dining scene before the storm gave the rescue real stakes, since the goal was recovery of something proven rather than reinvention of something broken.
After the cameras left
Shibo is still operating, now under a new name. Around late September 2022 it was renamed Yumbootik International Cuisine, and it continues to trade with an active Facebook page and current hours listed on Yelp at Calle Loiza 2012 in San Juan, which puts the status at high confidence as a renamed survivor. The siblings' fusion restaurant recovered from Hurricane Maria's damage and kept going under a fresh identity, landing this one among the clearer survivors of the show's Puerto Rico rescues, a light of the local scene brought back.
