What happened on the show

A former psychologist was running a Detroit jazz club while her interfering family undermined her leadership and let the staff coast. At Jazz Katz in Southfield, Taffer had to get a capable owner out from under relatives who second-guessed her and enabled a lazy, complacent crew, and for the recon he brought in Grammy- and Emmy-winning jazz bassist Robert Hurst to read the room with a musician's ear. The rescue worked to shore up the owner's authority and sharpen a club drifting on family interference. Taffer reopened the venue as Back Beat, a piano-bar rebrand meant to give the room a clearer musical identity and its owner the standing to run it, betting that a psychologist turned club owner, freed of her meddling family, could finally lead the business the way she understood people.

Jazz Katz, rebranded Back Beat, has since closed, most likely in 2016. No independent primary source pinned the exact closure date, but a different business, the Punchline Comedy Lounge, now operates at the same address, 29555 Northwestern Highway, and that turnover is the strongest available corroboration, holding the closure at medium confidence. The psychologist's jazz club did not survive: whatever the makeover changed, the room turned over to an unrelated comedy venue, and the Back Beat identity is gone from the Southfield address.
