What happened on the show

Alex Polizzi dropped in on 69-year-old Alan in series 14, who had hoped the Crown in the Wiltshire village of Aldbourne would set him up for retirement but instead found himself toiling around the clock for nothing. Taken aback by the state of the place, Polizzi refused to check herself in, a blunt verdict on the state of the place. The case fit a recurring and poignant type: an older owner whose retirement plan had become a grind, running a village pub with rooms that consumed his labour and returned nothing. Polizzi's task was to make the Crown pay enough to justify Alan's effort, or to spare him from a business quietly eating his later years. Alan's grinding retirement gamble opened series 14 in June 2018, and the show returned in the series 15 finale in 2019 to a much-improved village pub.

After the cameras left

The Crown Inn is still trading, a village pub with five en-suite rooms, now also styled the Crown Inn With Rooms, on The Square in Aldbourne. Its official site is live with January 2025-dated guest-room photography, and it holds a strong four and a half out of five on TripAdvisor, with its restaurant ranked top in the village. The show returned for a revisit in the series 15 finale in 2019. Alan's retirement gamble, which Polizzi found grinding him down, appears to have steadied into a well-regarded village pub with rooms.
