What happened on the show
Alex Polizzi's series 9 opener at the Clover in Birmingham came with an unusual condition: owner Tim Higgs insisted she strip off before starting work, because the Clover was a naturist retreat. She soon found the no-clothes rule applied everywhere, even the lounge and restaurant, a policy she judged likely to deter more customers than it drew. Despite rising debts, Tim refused to budge on his naturist principles, which set up the central tension of the case. Polizzi's challenge was to broaden the hotel's appeal enough to fix the finances without asking Tim to abandon the very concept that defined the place, a delicate negotiation between commercial reality and a committed owner's values. Tim Higgs's naturist principles aired in July 2012, and the property kept them, adding a spa dimension rather than shedding the concept that defined it.
After the cameras left
The Clover survived and rebranded, now trading as the Clover Spa and Hotel, sometimes styled the Clover Naturist Spa and Hotel, at Erdington in Birmingham. Its official site is live with an events calendar running to August 2026, functional booking and current pricing, and a Birmingham Mail article from October 2012 describing Polizzi's clash with the no-clothes policy confirms the match. Rather than dilute the naturist identity Tim defended, the business added a spa dimension and endured, keeping its distinctive concept intact while broadening what it offers.
