What happened on the show
Alex Polizzi's series 5 travels took her abroad to Hotel du Repos, a guest house in the Swiss Alps run by British couple Liz and Michael, who had emigrated a year earlier only to see their hoped-for restful retirement buried under an avalanche of work. One bedroom left Polizzi cautiously positive, but dinner did not: she was unimpressed by the unprofessional appearance of the staff and by a largely unused formal dining room. The case had the familiar shape of well-meaning people overwhelmed by a business they had underestimated, and Polizzi's task was to bring professional discipline to an operation the couple were running on goodwill and exhaustion rather than system. The alpine case aired in the series 5 finale in August 2009, one of the show's rare ventures beyond the UK during Polizzi's early run.
After the cameras left
Hotel du Repos is open and trading well. The family-run hotel, opposite the train station in Val d'Illiez in the Swiss Alps, keeps a live official site and current-year listings on the major booking platforms as of 2026. As our records note explicitly, this is a UK show that featured a property outside the UK, so it sits a little apart from the rest of the directory. Liz and Michael's overwhelmed venture appears to have found its footing, and the alpine guest house remains a going concern.
