What happened on the show

Blaine Cook was fielding complaints that the costumed mascot at his Seattle burger spot, Zippy the Yum Yum Burger Boy, was acting erratically. Charles Stiles sent mystery diners Nadine and John in as a cashier and a customer. As aired, the mascot's regular performer had been quietly sending an unemployed roommate, sometimes drunk, to fill the suit while he cared for his injured mother. The confrontation is a gentler one than most: the roommate talks Blaine out of firing the performer, arguing the lapses were his own doing, and Blaine bans the roommate instead while giving the performer another chance. Stiles closes with the right man back in the costume. Because Mystery Diners was later accused of scripting these reveals, this mascot sting, and its soft landing, is best read as broadcast rather than as documented event.
