What happened after
French restaurant on Clement St, Richmond District, founded 1996, at this location since 2007. Currently operating Wed-Sun 5-9pm (later Fri/Sat).
What happened on the show
Philippe Gardelle had complaints that his San Francisco French restaurant's waiters were rude, and Charles Stiles sent mystery diners in as a waiter and three customers. As aired, one waiter, Renaud, does come off short and slips outside to smoke, but the cameras then catch a second waiter, Michael, pocketing Renaud's tips and badmouthing him to guests, which turns out to be the source of Renaud's stress. Philippe's own son, a busboy, is disrespectful and secretly dating a hostess besides. The confrontation is forgiving: Philippe makes Michael repay Renaud and fires him, warns Renaud and his son, and lets the son keep the relationship if it stays off the floor. With the staging allegations that later trailed Mystery Diners in mind, this misjudged-waiter sting is best framed as broadcast rather than as independently confirmed.
After the cameras left
Chapeau is still open, a Richmond District fixture the episode never really threatened. The French restaurant, founded in 1996 and at 126 Clement Street since 2007, keeps regular Wednesday-through-Sunday dinner hours in our 2026 pass, and a stray closed listing elsewhere is contradicted by its live sites. A long-running neighborhood room simply kept its doors open, no rescue involved. The rudeness complaints made for an episode; they had no bearing on the restaurant's staying power.
