What happened on the show

Carl Zapffe worried that a feud between his waiter son and his head waitress was driving staff out of his Austin restaurant. Charles Stiles sent a single mystery diner, Holly, in undercover as a waitress. As aired, the head waitress berates the son, wrongly, for being late and never cracks a smile, while the son quietly admits he does not want to inherit the place, and a baker turns out to be using the kitchen's supplies to make gluten-free brownies for a farmers market, hiding the sideline behind the family drama. The confrontation has Carl firing the baker, warning the waitress, and letting his son leave with his blessing. Because Mystery Diners was later accused of staging these reveals, this family-friction sting is best read as broadcast rather than as independently confirmed.
