What happened on the show
Giuseppi's was a family torn three ways. Veteran restaurateurs Joe and Kathy Borgia had come out of retirement at their son Sam's urging so he could eventually take over, but Joe did not believe Sam had it, Sam felt his father never gave him a chance, and Kathy was worn out refereeing between them. The Macomb Township Italian spot looked stuck in the seventies and cooked like it: rubbery octopus salad, hideous cheese on the potato skins, and an eggplant rollatini that sous chef Brian admitted had been microwaved. Joe pushed speed over everything, ordering the kitchen to keep microwaving while plates came back rejected, then threw Sam out of his own kitchen for following those very instructions. Kathy quietly told Ramsay their house had already been foreclosed on and her marriage might not survive a failure. Ramsay's job was less about recipes than getting a father to stop treating his son like dirt.
After the cameras left
The recession finished what the family feuding started. Giuseppi's, at 46712 Hayes Road in Macomb Township, closed roughly a year after its 2008 episode, its failure attributed to the broader economic downturn then battering Michigan. For a couple who had already lost their house to keep the restaurant alive, it was a costly second act that the timing never gave a fair shot.
