What happened on the show

Flies, a scattershot menu, and a tangle of managers greeted Ramsay when he walked over from his own nearby restaurant to Dillon's, a Manhattan spot that general manager Martin Hyde described as an American-Irish place with, in his words, an Indian-ness to it. Nobody could say what the floor manager actually did. Owner Mohammed Islaam was hemorrhaging money. The food matched the confusion: a vegetarian sampler Ramsay likened to something dehydrated and unpleasant, beef bhuna that turned out to be lamb, and a biryani topped with visibly rotted tomato. During service he caught a cook stirring food in a container on the floor while Martin reclined in a booth getting his scalp massaged by a waitress, which earned the manager the memorable send-off of general tosspot. Ramsay brought in chef Vikas Khanna partway through, and the restaurant was rebranded Purnima during production.

After the cameras left

The rebrand to Purnima bought little time. The Indian restaurant at 245 West 54th Street closed in 2009, two years after Ramsay's visit. A former staffer's lawsuit tied to the episode was reportedly dismissed. The kitchen chaos the cameras caught, a crowd of managers and no clear authority, proved far more durable than any single fix, and no successor at the address surfaced in later reporting.
