Grade I Jacobean house closed to the public in 2022 for major renovation. Owner Cornelia Bayley no longer resides there; as of Jan 2025 the house's entire contents (furniture, statuary, ceramics) were being sold at auction via Rogers Jones & Co under Power of Attorney to fund her care costs.

What happened on the show

For most of the twentieth century Plas Teg, a Grade I listed Jacobean mansion near Pontblyddyn in Flintshire, sat derelict. Cornelia Bayley changed that in 1986, buying the house and pouring her life and her money into it, but the endless upkeep of an old building on that scale had left her isolated and close to broke by the time Ruth Watson arrived. The estate was a labour of love that had stopped loving her back. Ruth's proposal was to open the house to film and photography shoots, a steady way to make the grand rooms earn without turning the place into a tourist attraction. Cornelia balked at the idea, uneasy about letting strangers loose in a home she had rescued by hand and feared they would damage. That reluctance was the real drama of the episode. When Ruth returned to Pontblyddyn for the Revisited follow-up, she wanted to see whether Cornelia had finally let the public in at Plas Teg and brought some badly needed income through the door.

After the cameras left

Plas Teg's story has taken a hard turn. The Grade I Jacobean house shut its doors to visitors in 2022 for a major programme of renovation, and Cornelia Bayley no longer lives there. As of early 2025 the entire contents of the house, furniture, statuary and ceramics, were being sold at auction under a power of attorney, the proceeds directed toward her care. We fetched the auctioneer's page directly for that; the surrounding local-news reporting we saw only in snippet form, so we date the public closure to 2022 and note the contents dispersal separately in 2025. The decades Cornelia gave to Plas Teg near Pontblyddyn are not in question. What the record now shows is a house closed and emptied, its long single-owner era drawing to a close rather than a business still trading.
