What happened on the show

Meldon Park is a Grade II* listed mansion five miles from Morpeth in Northumberland, home to the Cookson family since 1832. Across the generations the family's fortunes had risen and fallen, and so had the size of the estate, but by the time Simon Davis arrived the arithmetic had turned against them: income was no longer keeping pace with escalating running costs, parts of the house were beginning to crumble, and time was short. The job of turning it around had fallen to James Cookson and his wife Emily. Simon's practical fix was to make the estate's walled garden earn, persuading the Cooksons to run a proper money-making cafe there rather than leave the asset idle. It is a modest-sounding intervention for a house of this size near Morpeth, but that is often the point of the series: a single, viable revenue stream, well run, can be the difference between a family holding on and a family selling up.

After the cameras left

Meldon Park's house has changed hands, though the family have not left the land. As of our latest verification pass the mansion together with thirty-six acres was sold in 2022, listed through Savills, and is no longer in Cookson ownership, while the family kept the far larger surrounding estate of some three thousand eight hundred acres near Morpeth. We drew the 2022 sale from a historic-homes database rather than a primary sale record, so we hold it at medium confidence; a later listed-building consent for renovating a lodge, seen in snippet form, suggests ownership and investment continued after the sale. So the walled-garden cafe and other efforts did not keep the house itself in Cookson hands, even as the family retained the estate around it.
