What happened on the show
Great Fulford is a Grade I listed manor set in three thousand acres near the village of Dunsford in Devon, a short way from Exeter, and it has been the Fulford family seat for some eight hundred years. Viewers may already have met its owners: Francis and Kishanda Fulford had featured on Channel 4 back in 2004 in the frank fly-on-the-wall series about the family, which makes their appearance here a return to familiar cameras. By the time Simon Davis visited, the future of Great Fulford was hanging in the balance. Parts of the house had gone untouched for decades and others were starting to crumble, the classic bind of an ancient family seat whose upkeep had outrun its income. In keeping with the series format, the work centred on making the estate near Dunsford earn its own keep, opening this long-held house up to the kinds of paying uses, events and functions and hosted visits, that could fund the repairs a building of this age and scale constantly demands.
