What happened on the show
Sue Tipton had bought the Gungate in Tamworth on impulse, looking for a challenge, and the last few years had become a constant struggle, leaving her running the business virtually single-handed by the time Alex Polizzi arrived in series 10. That combination, an impulse purchase and a sole operator stretched thin, frames the case. A hotel with a bar is a lot for one person to carry, and Polizzi's task was to help Sue get on top of an operation that had run away from her, or at least to restructure it so it stopped consuming her. The Staffordshire property had potential, but its owner needed a workable way to run it without burning out. Sue Tipton's impulse buy aired in March 2014, and the property she had nearly run into the ground alone has since become a stylish small hotel.
After the cameras left
The Gungate came through and trades well today, a three-star boutique hotel with a cocktail and wine bar in Tamworth. Its official site is live with 2026 booking dates and active social links, a firm sign of current operation. Sue Tipton's impulse buy, which had nearly overwhelmed her as a solo operator, appears to have found its footing and grown into a stylish small hotel, one of the clearer series 10 successes. The property that once ran away from its owner is a confident going concern now.
