Alex Polizzi went to Edgware in north London in series 8 expecting, in the show's wry framing, a slick and profitable little business, and found the opposite. The Madonna Halley was shoddy and badly finished, its cheery owners, the Florides family, well-meaning but losing money at an alarming rate. Polizzi catalogued a string of failings, including a genuinely stomach-turning carpet in her en-suite bathroom, before cracking the whip and bringing in her own design team to smarten the place up. The case fit a recurring type: warm, likeable proprietors whose affability was not matched by the standards or the commercial discipline the hotel needed, leaving Polizzi to supply both the tough love and the makeover. The Florides family's likeable but loss-making operation aired in October 2011, and the north London hotel continues to trade if not to top its rankings.
