What happened on the show
Ruth Watson opened the series opposite Kate and John, a married couple who had sold the family home and poured every penny of their savings into a six-bedroom guest house on a smart Stratford-upon-Avon street, trading as Nando's. They worked the place around the clock and still could not pull ahead. Theirs was the only bed and breakfast on the road without an RAC diamond rating, and rated rivals were quietly taking the trade. Watson, in the pre-Polizzi era of the show, dealt in plain talk rather than sympathy, and she made the couple stare at the gap between how hard they grafted and how little the business returned. The trouble was less effort than positioning: a dated offer competing in a town full of visitors who had smarter, accredited choices a few doors down. Her fix pointed at lifting standards to chase that missing rating and giving guests a concrete reason to pick this house over the next one.
