What happened on the show
Alex Polizzi took over the show with series 4, and one of her early cases was the Brecon Castle, reputed to be the oldest hotel in Wales, built on the site of an eleventh-century Norman fortress in the Welsh market town. A property with that pedigree ought to sell itself, which was precisely the frustration: the history was an asset the operation was not turning into trade. Polizzi's method, sharper and more design-led than her predecessor's, was to find the gap between what a place like this could command and what it was actually delivering, then close it. Her brief at Brecon was to make the castle's forty-plus rooms and its heritage work commercially rather than lean on the story alone.
After the cameras left
Brecon Castle came through and traded up. It now operates as The Castle of Brecon Hotel, part of the Coaching Inn Group, and has been through a refurbishment reported at around three million pounds. The forty-two room property still bills itself as the oldest hotel in Wales. Absorption into a well-run pub-and-hotel group, alongside the sort of investment a small independent could never self-fund, turned a struggling heritage site into a stable branded operation. This is one of the cleaner rebrand-and-survive outcomes in the Polizzi era.
