What happened on the show

Almost thirty years without closing for a single day sounds like a triumph, and at Golden Pizza it was also the trap. Owner Andy had spent decades sheltered inside his East York pizzeria on Broadview Avenue, so insulated by routine that he had not registered how much the world outside had changed. His daughter Stephanie, who had grown up in the restaurant, and her husband Chris were desperate to drag the outdated space into the present. Restaurant Takeover made that generational push its story, sending chef Corbin Tomaszeski and designer Montana Burnett in on the six-day Food Network Canada clock, the reboot of Restaurant Makeover. The tension was Andy against change itself: a proud founder who equated never closing with never needing to adapt, and a younger generation trying to renovate both the room and his thinking before the dwindling business ran out of time in Toronto.

After the cameras left

Golden Pizza held on for another decade, then closed. The family-owned pizzeria at 1201 Broadview Avenue in Toronto's East York, which had served Greek dishes and pizza for more than forty years, shut permanently in November 2023 according to blogTO. That gives us a firm, recent date, and it means the restaurant outlasted its makeover by roughly ten years, no small thing. Andy's resistance to change made for tense television, but the business he built kept going long after the cameras left, closing only after a run most independent restaurants never approach.
