What happened on the show

The New City stakeout was billed as a peacemaking mission as much as a rescue. Agnello's, a coal fired brick oven pizzeria, was run by family partners at odds with each other, and Degel's hidden cameras were pointed as much at the relationships behind the counter as at the service in front of it. As aired, the surveillance gave him a way to show the partners how their conflict looked from the outside, playing out in front of staff and customers who could feel the tension even when the pizza was good. Degel's fixes leaned on getting the family to define who was actually in charge and to stop letting old grievances run the floor. It was a version of the show's recurring theme, that the thing wrecking a restaurant is frequently the people who own it, and that a stakeout is only useful if the owners are willing to see themselves clearly.

Agnello's closed on its own terms rather than in failure. The owners announced on Facebook in August 2022 that they were retiring and closing after three decades in business, a run that had started back in 1992. Local coverage from The Journal News listed the New City pizzeria among a batch of area closures that year. Thirty years is a long life for any restaurant, and a voluntary retirement is about as soft a landing as this show's alumni get.
