What happened on the show

Mike & Nellie's had worked when Mike cooked and his father Nelson, known as Nellie, ran the floor, but Nellie's death left Mike alone and adrift, drinking beer through his shifts and unaware how far the food had fallen. His daughter Samantha, who picked Ramsay up, said the loss had changed everything. Mike rated his own cooking in the upper nines and blamed any trouble on atmosphere or service, so Ramsay walked him through the reality: bland watery linguine with rubbery shrimp, an overcharred steak named for his late father, and a chicken Murphy so ugly he gathered the staff to look at it, prompting Samantha to call it the hot mess and Ramsay to counter that it was the hot joke. During service Mike cracked another beer, cooked fast to unhappy customers, and could not grasp why. His family kept saying the same thing: he had to learn to delegate before he drank the restaurant into the ground.

After the cameras left

Mike & Nellie's closed in January 2012, only about three months after its October episode. The Oakhurst space at 1801 Highway 35 North is now an Italian restaurant, Posillipo, and the former owners moved into catering as Blue Basil Catering Company. A restaurant that lost its heart when Nellie died could not be revived by a son still grieving behind the stove, though the family did find a softer second act away from the dinner rush.
