What happened after
Original Anaheim location closed in 2017 amid a family dispute and sale of the building; the business reopened later in 2017 as a smaller takeout-focused spot in Fullerton, CA, still run by Luigi with wife Grace, and remains open as of 2025 (4.4 stars Yelp per source).
Closure date on record: 2017
What happened on the show
Standing outside Luigi's D'Italia, Ramsay read a website boasting of a 22-year-old chef and got excited to work with young talent, only to be met by Luigi himself, 51, and to learn the glowing line was a review from 1981. That gap said everything about the Anaheim institution, founded that year by Luigi and his father Domenico. When Domenico retired to Italy, Luigi's brother Tony became his partner, and the two now got along so badly they simply ran the restaurant on alternate nights. Grace, Luigi's wife and floor manager, was so abrasive that Tony said customers avoided the place when she worked, and she erupted screaming and cursing at him right in front of Ramsay. The debt had reached 1.5 million dollars. The food was frozen and joyless too, the fried ravioli premade and barely tasting of cheese, the mahi mahi mushy and underseasoned. Luigi feared that losing the restaurant would mean letting his father down.
After the cameras left
Luigi's did not close so much as shrink and move. The original Anaheim location closed in 2017 amid a family dispute and the sale of the building, but Luigi reopened later that year as a smaller, takeout-focused spot in nearby Fullerton, still cooking alongside his wife Grace. As of our latest verification it remains open there. The institution Luigi feared he would lose survived in a leaner form, so this counts as a relocation rather than a loss, even if the original Anaheim room is gone.
