What happened on the show

Chief Fitzpatrick could not stop telling anyone who would listen that his son-in-law Mitch was ruining the Grasshopper, one location in the Irish restaurant chain Chief had built, and the constant criticism was pushing Mitch toward a breakdown. Ramsay watched the dynamic play out at the pass: Chief tasted the French onion soup, declared it tasted like tar, and Mitch sent it out anyway. Ramsay was blunter, likening it to onions in boiling dishwater and saying someone had urinated in his soup. The shepherd's pie was made with beef, which by definition it should not be, and even as a cottage pie it had congealed to glue. In the kitchen he found frozen scallops and, more disturbing, meat blood soaked into the breading for the mozzarella sticks. Mitch admitted he never checked the fridge, trusting a staff that had let it go. Ramsay's read was that Chief was a boss with no leadership and a mentor who only knew how to blame.

After the cameras left

The Grasshopper earned an improved four-star rating in the wake of Ramsay's visit, but the reprieve was temporary. The Carlstadt restaurant, at 645 Washington Avenue, closed in 2012, roughly two years after the episode. A family business where the owner could not stop tearing down the son-in-law he had brought in was fighting itself as much as the market, and no successor kept the name.
