In Williston, North Dakota, at the center of the Bakken oil boom, the Missouri Flats Inn was a property riding one of the most volatile lodging markets in the country, where oil-field demand could fill or empty a hotel overnight. The episode, Getting Screwed, captured a sense of an operation being taken advantage of or coming up short. A hotel in a boomtown faces wild swings and intense competition from purpose-built worker lodging, so a soft operation loses out fast when demand cools. Melchiorri took the property apart piece by piece at the 35th Street property, challenging ownership to run a disciplined operation that could hold its own through the market's swings. He asked of them what the series asked of almost everyone for a property in a boom-and-bust market: control what you can, deliver a clean and reliable stay, and do not count on the boom to cover for a weak operation.
