What happened on the show
Over in the Gold Country town of Grass Valley, the Holbrooke was a historic 28-room hotel with real pedigree, a California Historical Landmark whose guest book reputedly held presidents and outlaws from the mining era. The episode, Running on Empty, framed a heritage property that had drifted, coasting on history while the operation ran down. Melchiorri's task was the familiar landmark balance: protect the genuine period character that made the Holbrooke special while fixing the neglect that a small historic hotel cannot afford. He combed the corridors and the common areas at 212 West Main Street, pressing the owners to modernize where guests feel it and to sell the hotel's storied past as a marketable asset rather than an excuse. The aim was a historic hotel that ran on more than nostalgia, delivering a clean, confident stay worthy of its landmark status.
After the cameras left
The Holbrooke was rescued and later elevated. The hotel was revisited in a 2014 Hotel Impossible Undercover episode, and as of our 2026 verification the historic 28-room property is open and now part of the Curator Hotel & Resort Collection, an affiliation of independent hotels, with a live official site. The Gold Rush landmark that was running on empty is now a boutique-collection member trading firmly on the history the show told it to protect. Confirmed operating as of 2026.
