Monreith House gave Ruth Watson one of her more exasperating clients. Sir Michael Maxwell had inherited the Category A listed Georgian mansion near Port William in Dumfries and Galloway in the early 1980s, from an uncle who reportedly thought it would be cheaper to let the grand house collapse than to pay to demolish it.
